About
My name is Heather.
I created this blog for two purposes: to document my journey to a waste-free home, and to create a resource-list for waste-free products in Calgary, Alberta.
Our household consists of myself, my partner, our dog, and our two cats. We live in a small bungalow in central Calgary. Both of us work full-time, but in my time off, I love to scheme about ways to make our home more sustainable by producing less household waste and simplifying our lives.
I have often considered myself to be a fairly responsible consumer, but to be honest, I have quite a ways to go. Although I have implemented quite a few waste-reduction practices in my home, our household still generates a fair amount of garbage. Some of our garbage is trash, and some of it recycling. Don't get me wrong, recycling is good, but it's not good enough. Plastics especially can be very difficult to recycle and are often shipped overseas for processing. I believe that even our recycling should be limited through reduced and thoughtful consumerism.
For the purposes of this exercise, at this point in time, my main effort will be in finding products free of plastic packaging, because the reading I have done tells me that these are the most problematic to recycle. Obviously finding products free of any packaging is preferable.
Thanks for visiting! I hope that this blog will be a great resource for those living in Calgary, Alberta. If you have contributions or ideas on products that can be acquired package-free, or at least plastic-free, please feel free to let me know!
